1. My final PPP piece.

    Summer 2012

Over Summer I plan to continue pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Whether this is trying new techniques, styles or other software I plan on pushing myself in all aspects of my work. I’m going to start a fresh sketchbook which I will use as a daily journal where I will focus on new subjects. We touched upon drawing architecure and landscapes in a previous illustration brief on the course and after discovering Tim Doyle’s Unreal Estate I want to return to drawing the city and experimenting with various illustrative styles. I also plan on continuing my Lost But Never Forgotten theme which will bring opportunities to experiment in new areas of Visual Communication.

  2. Aaron Draplin is an American graphic designer and founder of Draplin Design Co. In this video he shares his memo book collection which was the inspiration behind his successful side project Field Notes. He speaks about how important it is for us to share visual history which I can relate to as I want to explore and work with the idea of ‘sharing visual history’ myself with my Lost But Never Forgotten theme.

  3. (cross post)

Ripo is a New York street artist whose approach to art is kind of ‘postgraffiti’. His work prominently consists of spray paint techniques (especially in his larger pieces) and resembles those of graffiti styles but a lot more thought goes into his work and the way his typographical visuals communicate themes perfectly. In my eyes, he’s a designer, typographer, street and graffiti artist all in one big creative clusterfuck.

From Ripo’s website on the piece above,

For years this was a spot to go paint with friends with little stress except the wind blowing our pieces across the wall. Hundreds of artists had painted this kilometer stretch of cement (front and back) that separates the Barcelona port from the Mediterranean Sea. Along with the construction of a luxury hotel next to this wall came the biggest wash of grey paint I have ever seen. The entire wall, front and back, was erased to a boring grey slab. So Much History had been Erased so that those at the hotel can feel like we were never there. Barcelona, Spain.

  4. Michael Manoogian is an old school logo designer. He’s worked for some of the biggest names from around the World such as the Super Bowl and Bob Dylan. It amazes me how he simply created the above pieces with pen on paper.

  5. After working on indcsn’s Spring collection (especially the logo above) I realised I was quite inexperienced in type based design. Though I enjoy typography I struggle with it and always find myself seeking help and working from other examples so I’ve decided to write a new statement of intent and change the direction of my PPP project.

    New statement of intent

    Experiment with typography styles

I want to create a set of visuals that are type based without using any other type work as a point of reference.

  6. Alex Sickling is an image maker and ceramicist whose work I really admire. She’s currently a third year Vis Commer and I’m looking forward to seeing her final work on the 15th.

  7.

  8. Jeff Staple is one of my biggest inspirations within the creative industry. He founded Staple Design, the visual communications agency, in the late 90s which started out as a lifestyle menswear collection and has since collaborated with huge names such as Nike (NYC Pigeon Dunks above), Microsoft and Timberland.

Jeff has also gone on to launch Reed Space, a lifestyle boutique that has been ”regarded as one of the World’s most innovative stores”.

  9. For my birthday last year I went to the Dead Sea Mob’s exhibition in Manchester with Adam. I’m a member on the tee shirt design community website Mintees and it was great to finally meet some of my favourite illustrators whose work I have followed through Mintees for years now.

  10. I decided to start my PPP project with a photo zine. I chose the theme ‘Lost But Never Forgotten’ as I want to make a zine based on childhood memories and recollections e.g. trends, fashion, celebrities that have come and gone over the past twenty decades that I will never forget.

  11.

  12. Spotted these Glen E. Friedman X Shepard Fairey original screen prints in college today. Maybe he should have collaborated with the Associated Press on the HOPE posters…

On a serious note, Fairey executed Friedman’s photographs perfectly in these prints. I want one.

  13. Statement of intent:

Throughout my PPP project I plan to explore visual communication and experiment with various mediums, styles and forms of communication to voice my opinions and ideas on whatever subjects I like. The result is to hopefully connect with like-minded people.

I will communicate and visualise these ideas and messages through a combination of illustration, design and typography. I’m going to use this self-directed brief as a platform of trial and error so I can improve and learn from my mistakes; expanding my knowledge and skills ready for future projects inside and out of the course.

    So far:

I have learnt how to use the laser cutter which I’d love to experiment with in the near future. I first stepped out of my Photoshop comfort zone when we had the InDesign tutorials which were extremely useful. I also discovered that I can print high quality vinyl stickers in the digital print room at a reasonable price which will be a very useful resource.

I think my strengths have been in the visual work I’ve produced in the projects, I’ve been satisfied with the illustrations and final outcomes. My weakness lies in balancing my time between course work, my own work as well as commissioned work. I’ve found that it’s quite difficult to stay motivated and stay consistent with various ongoing projects so I’ll be aiming to work on my organistation this year.

  14. “Art is Work”

Milton Glaser is one of the most influential graphic designers of our time. He has a unique style and approach to his work as well as an inspiring perspective of life and art.

  15. Short and fun photozines by Leeds based design studio Catalogue. They also run a screen printing press which I plan on using in the near future.
